About the Club

West Atholl Rifle Club is a full-bore target shooting club which caters for those shooting “TR” under national rules at distances from 300m to 1000 yards. The calibre's used are 5.56mm (.223Rem) and 7.62mm NATO (.308Win). The older calibre of .303 is still allowed but is not competitive. Rifles must weigh 6.5Kg or less, have a trigger pull weight of at least 1.5 Kg and be equipped with “open” aperture sights. Telescopic sights are not used.

There is another version of shooting with a TR rifle but with the aid of a bipod and telescopic sights as under “TR/F” rules below:
  • Max weight of rifle, sights and bipod – 8.25 Kg
  • Calibre .308, .223 or .303
  • Max. Bullet weight in 308, 156 gr. No limit for 223 or 303
  • Front bipod allowed but no other front rest.
  • No rear bag or rest.
  • Minimum trigger pull 1.5Kg
  • Shooting on standard TR target with no white centre.

The Club also caters for the discipline of “F Class” in which any calibre is allowed up to 8mm, the rifle can weigh up to 10Kg, there is no lower limit on trigger pull weight. A rear bag rest, front rest/bipod and telescopic sights are allowed.

The Range has now been fitted out with Electronic Targets, one for each of the six target frames. Electronic monitors, one per target, can be arranged on any of the firing points via a radio link from the Butts.

NRA Target faces are used for each of the range distances. Scoring ring dimensions are as per the table below along with score value.

Since the Club started over 60 years ago it has had a range on Atholl land. The current Jubilee Range was opened in 1977 and is in Glen Tilt, about 2 miles from Blair Castle. It is the longest and most scenic rifle range in Britain and the most heavily used such facility in Scotland.

The Club has always enjoyed excellent support and co-operation from Atholl Estates and their staff. Atholl Estates provide a wide range of accommodation, from caravans to lodges sleeping 20. There is a large programme of leisure activities, with something to suit everyone. Details are at www.atholl-estates.co.uk

It should be noted that the Club's Constitution, our agreement with Atholl Estates and our Insurance Policy all prohibit use of the Range other than on scheduled days as stated on the Club programme. Shooting on the range by individuals at other times is not allowed.

The photographs below show the layout of the range, which extends back to 1,200 yard for the specialised discipline of Match Rifle shooting.
