Important Matters Concerning Electronic Target Usage |
Dear
West Atholl Member,
Our electronic targetry and associated kit has been put at
risk in several ways and its expected life of 10 years is looking
like wishful thinking unless we take extra care. Please note
the following and act accordingly. I appreciate that it's all
very tedious, but we have very fully stretched our funds to pay
for this much-appreciated improvement, and expensive repairs
or replacements are out of the question in the foreseeable future.
Targets and frames: We have a lot of frame damage from wide shots.
It is essential that if you arrive for an event unsure of your
zero you inform whoever is in charge and shoot at a mark on the
buttstop until you are "on", however inconvenient or
embarrassing that may be. Despite requests for this we have had
people shooting way off the target at club shoots, NRC of S events
and at two open competitions. We have more damage after 3 months
than we expected in three seasons.
Monitors. These are not waterproof, or even "shower resistant".
They cost £1,200 each and can be wrecked by water ingress.
At the first hint of rain they must be covered with polythene
bags until the gazebos are up. Please don't put this off on the
grounds that "there are just a couple of shots left".
Under the gazebos they must be kept well under the awning, and
covered by bags if rain is coming from the north.
Monitors must be covered when they are moved between firing points
if there is any rain at all. The silver coloured XCR connectors
at either end of the black monitor cables corrode if they get
wet and must not be left lying in wet grass when kit is moved
between firing points.
To fix the monitors to their stands, lay them face down on dry
ground. We have been fixing them with the stands and monitors
upright, which has caused scratches on the monitor faces from
the top ends of the stands. The stands should be fixed with the
point of the V pointing backwards (away from the face).
Gazebos. These must be carried closed up with the polystyrene
cap and green cover in place. Moving them erected between firing
points has twisted one. Replacements cost £1,350 each. |

7.62mm bullet weight limit |
| Dear West Atholl Member,
Your committee has decided that the upper weight limit for 7.62mm bullets
used in Club shoots will be increased to 156 grains. This is to take
account of the availability of a new Berger bullet of 155.5 gr. and of
a recent change in the Palma rules.
This change applies to WARC shoots. Events run by other organisations
are not affected unless those organisations so decide.

NOTICE
TO MEMBERS AND VISITORS
Dear
West Atholl Member,
Following the arrival of electronic targets we no longer need to have
everyone on the range by 09.45 to squad shooters and markers; but we
do need much more time and help for setting up and closing down the range.
The new protocol has been revised following experience at the last two
shoots.
One committee member will collect monitors etc and ammunition from the
armoury at 09.00 and will supervise setting up of the firing point. After
shooting, this person will return these items to the armoury, and will
have no further duties on that day.
The Duty Member for the day will be on the first distance firing point
by 09.15 and will log in members in the order in which they report to
him. It is the responsibility of those intending to shoot to make their
arrival known in this way.
Those who wish to shoot both distances arrive between 09.15 and 11.00.
Those arriving after 11.00 shoot only the second distance.
Shooting will be in order of arrival.
Some of those who arrive first will set up the butts. One of them will
fuel the generator and take it and the monitor stands to the firing point
at that stage. This "butt party" will shoot first at the second
distance, after which they can leave.
Shooting will begin at 10.00. RCOs will be allocated by the Duty Member
as shooting progresses, as there will be no "details" as such.
The last 4 people to arrive will shoot last and will help the Duty Member
for the day to close down the butts after shooting.
The Duty Member's decision on who does what is "definitive".
The target frames (£1,000 each) have already suffered wide shots
which only just missed the cabling which conveys data from the target
sensors. If a cable, or sensor, is hit the target is out of action until
it can be repaired, which takes about an hour and will cost up to £175.
We cannot do much about bad shooting or failure to notice a six-minute
wind change, but the indications are that these shots came from non-zeroed
rifles. If you are not certain of your wind or elevation settings, it
is ESSENTIAL that you tell the duty member, who will arrange for you
to shoot at a sighting mark on the buttstop, well away from the targets,
and have your shots spotted.
Your co-operation is requested, as is your feedback.
